Agrimony

Agrimony, from the Greek ‘Argemone’, was originally known as the ‘herb that could heal the eyes’. Known by Roman naturalist, Pliny the Elder, as “an herb of princely authorité”, Agrimony has been used in folklore (though known as ‘Cocklebur’, then) for ailments of the body and protection of the mind, body and spirit. In Complete Herbal (1653), Nicholas Culpeper noted its use in cleansing sores with Agrimony, while the tea has also been used as a drink that tastes of Springtime.

Traditionally known in Western culture as Church Steeple (in Eastern, Xian He Cao) , Agrimony has been viewed as akin to a church steeple and its healing powers associated with those of a holy power. The herb’s leaves and seeds were steeped into a tea to help with symptoms of diarrhea, liver and gallbladder disease, assorted kidney issues, and irritable bowl syndrome, as well as for hemorrhages. Culpeper also recommended it to assist in relieving the symptoms of most ailments of the back. Used in an herbal bath bag or internally, Agrimony has been said to help assist in issues with menstruation as well as help improve the overall health of the skin, while also easing inflammation due to boils, pimples, or other skin conditions. It can help tone the digestive system, allowing for increased nutrient uptake and was noted in the 1700’s for its assistance with jaundice. In the Middle Ages, Agrimony was used in the heat of battle due to its actions in supporting blood clots forming for quick wound relief. In 15th century France, it was utilized in “Eau de Arquebusade”, a water used to treat gunshot wounds that is used more often for sprains or bruises today.

Agrimony has been used in magickal workings to break jinxes and return the energy and intention back to its negative sender. It is an ingredient used in Hoodoo works for counteracting the Evil Eye and vocal slander. It can be used in spellworking to explore the innermost workings of ones’ heart and balance emotions, while ushering in a level of acceptance. Use Agrimony to create a natural yellow colored dye.
