  • Hi
I see a lot of Ostara recipes whether they are food, incense or oils have nutmeg in them. What does nutmeg represent or do?

  • Hi August,
I personally think of nutmeg as a more Samhain or Yule-type spice with my cloves and my cinnamon. I had to do a little research. In various Sabbat books that I have, one does have a bit of nutmeg in the food recipes because they’re egg recipes, including a recipe for good old fashioned egg-nog under the Ostara section.
As for incense, Scott Cunningham published The Complete Book of Incense, Oils & Brews back in 1989 (he passed away in 1993. He uses nutmeg in his incense for Ostara without an explanation of why. A quick google search for Ostara incense recipes…wow! Four out of the first six links had Scott’s recipe, and 2 of those didn’t even give him (or his book) credit.
I can tell you the the magical properties of nutmeg include luck, money, health and fidelity. Maybe that’s why some people use it?
Thank you for the thought-provoking question, August!
