Calendula

Of all flowers harvested, Calendula remains one of the oldest beauties used in medicine and the kitchen. It is a member of the marigold family, whose name comes from a legend in which a golden-haired child named Mary-Gold disappeared one day and the place she was last seen, a small bundle of flowers the color of the sun appeared.

Calendula has been written about as a coloring agent in foods, soups, and stews since at least the 3rd century B.C. It was considered one of the most important parts of 5th century gardens in France. The original “he loves me, he loves me not” flower grows in most conditions. They are considered sacred flowers in India and are used to decorate statues of many deities. It has been worn in ritual since Aztec/Mayan times and are still used on Day of the Dead altars in Mexico and much of Central America. The flower is worn to remove stagnant energy. It helps find where emotions have been boxed away and opens us up to the potential of what healing with this flower can do for us. It is said that keeping Calendula under your pillow helps deter thieves, both of objects and energies. Women who crossed Calendula barefoot are said to communicate with birds.

Calendula is an antiseptic (prevents growth of microorganisms), anti-bacterial (prevents growth of bacteria), anti-fungal (prevents growth of fungi), and anti-inflammatory (eases muscle and joint inflammation). It can be used as a poultice to stop bleeding. Tea can be made to help treat intestinal disorders and menstrual cramps, as well as muscle spasms. A mouthwash from the tea can help with gum disease and oral fungus.

Persons with allergies to other members of the Asteraceae family (such as feverfew, chamomile, or Echinacea species) should exercise caution with calendula, as allergic cross-reactivity to Asteraceae plants is common.
