Spikenard Root

A North American Native, Spikenard Root grows anywhere from the center of Canada through the south to the Midwest and East Coast of the United States. The Cherokee cultivated Spikenard for medicinal purposes and taught the colonizers how to make it into a tea for backaches. The Menominee, who lived in modern day Wisconsin, used it as a cure for blood poisoning. The Shawnee, from modern day Pennsylvania, adapted its use for coughs, sore throats, asthmatic symptoms and overactive flatulence. It’s been used topically to facilitate wound and bruise-healing or decrease inflammation of the skin.

Spikenard is best used as a general tonic, meaning used regularly in the recommended dosage for optimal benefit. It has the ability to help support the adrenal glands and works to stimulate, aid in digestion, flush the system, induce sweating, and has alterative properties, meaning it helps to alter conditions in favor of balance. It stimulates the rebirth and renewal of the body’s damaged tissues.

An aid in behavior and changing old thought patterns to new, Spikenard helps ease thoughts of worry, which can allow for release of old wounds. As a member of the ginseng family, Spikenard can be used as a root tea for an “off” menstrual cycle and be used to help ease the flavors of other medicines. Also referred to as Fleabane, Spikenard can help repel fleas and was enjoyed as one of the original root beers. Its licorice-like taste has been compared to and used in the production of sarsaparilla drinks.
