Oregano

Oregano is an extension of the Mint family, though its taste is a bit more savory. Indigenous to Central and Southern Asia, Oregano was often cultivated in Southern Europe as well. The leaves and volatile oil of the plant are most commonly used for medicinal purposes; the leaf is a culinary staple.

Originally grown in Greece, they believed Oregano to be a gift from the goddess Aphrodite. The Romans soon adopted a love for this plant and assisted to spread its use through Southern Europe. Soon after, it was used in China to help with fever, stomachache, and infection.

Oregano is packed with antiseptic, antibacterial, and antiinflammatory properties, meaning it helps with arthritis, muscle and joint pain, gastric problems, and fever. It contains minerals vital to the human body, such as manganese, zinc, potassium, and calcium. It’s served in folk medicine as a natural medicine for yeast and fungal infections.

A tea made with the leaf of Oregano is said to help ease a sore throat, cold, nausea, and irritable bowel syndrome. Oregano may also help block free radicals (potentially cancerous) from forming in the system.

Topical or internal use reduces risk of infection on wounds, due to Oregano’s naturally antibiotic nature. “Wild Marjoram” is an analgesic, meaning it works to reduce pain and can help cure respiratory problems while reducing risk of bacterial infection.

Use Oregano in magick for protective purposes, as it wards against negative energies and intentions. Sprinkle across doorways for added home protection boundaries. Drink to assist in coping with grief, to gain clarity, invite joy, and for banishing and divination purposes.
