Valerian

A native to Asia and Europe, Valerian is a plant that can grow up to five feet tall and has also been grown hugely in the United States, as well as Belgium, France, and many other countries.

Originally described as a sleep aid as far back as Ancient Greece, the root of Valerian has been used medicinally since. Used as a menstrual flow stimulator and has been used as an aid for stress. It slows down the central nervous system and can help with heart palpitations or work as a diuretic, meaning it increases the flow of urine. The root is normally brewed as a tea or ground and used in capsule form to help calm an overly excited nervous system. It is recognized across the world as a sleep aid better than those prescribed, as it is shown not to interact with alcohol or other drugs.

A topical oil or salve infused with Valerian root can help treat sore muscles, bruises, and some rashes. It can also reduce the redness, swelling and itchiness of bug bites!

If you don’t happen to have catnip lying around, Valerian Root will seem to have a similar effect with your feline friends!

Hang bits of Valerian Root around the home to increase protection and encourage ease of trials and tension within the environment and increase its stability. It invites love, purification, and sweet dreams to those who utilize it and can be used as “graveyard dust” in magickal jars and other workings. The scent of Valerian Root is strong, so it is highly advised to mix with other pleasant-smelling herbs to increase intention and pleasant fragrance.

Caution is advised during the use of barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and other sedative drugs, as valerian has the potential to increase the effects of some sedatives.
