Music is transformative. It can take you through and beyond states of heart and mind and connect you with memories, feelings, hopes and dreams. The music you play when you are sad or despondent provides a pathway for your shadow to work with your consciousness to help you find balance and healing. Music bypasses the mind and penetrates the heart so you can free emotion. It may feel uncomfortable, raw or chaotic at first. However, music gifts you a safe way to be with and explore feelings so you can become comfortable with them, and healing can begin. When a song connects you with your hurt or bad memories, it may be your shadow communicating with you. It shows you how to hear your soul song and live your full potential. All music has its purpose. Diverse genres and vibes allow us to face and release different levels of emotion-from despair and anger to joy and ecstasy.
Shadow Mastery Class: Listening to the Soundtrack of Your Life
Meditation
Before you begin, play a melancholy playlist or song on repeat at a low volume.
Place your hand on the card. Gently close your eyes. Sense your body and concentrate on your breathing. Follow your breath inward. Hold for five seconds and relax. Breathe out and release all tension. Focus on the middle of your chest.
In front of you, a golden staircase descends into the earth. Walk down the ten healing steps to a magical, amethyst crystal cave. Each step reveals a deeper level of sadness. Step into the amethyst cave and greet your shadow. In front of you is a door labeled “Shadow Song Room.” Open the door and enter the room.
All you hear in the dimly lit room is your breathing and heartbeat. You notice a disc spinning and floating in the space. It begins to play a song. Against the blackness of the room, color emerges from the disc. You are seeing the vibrations of sound. The colors become streamers and ribbons which move around you in a dance of wild freedom. You too can join the dance. The music sounds richer and nebulous clouds of light join the symphony of color within the room. Open your heart and mind to the full experience of the music as you breathe light and sound into your body. Let it all in-all you can and can’t sense. Imagine you and the music becoming one in an energetic dance.
Feel the entirety of you-the wonderment, the wisdom and your soul song. Let the music bypass any walls and beliefs you put up to keep your emotions safe. Be present in the magnificence of you and your symphony of feeling. Allow the wisdom of your soul song to rise and dance within and around you. Stay here for as long as you like-at least thirty seconds.
When you are ready, float out of the room into the amethyst cave on a wave of sound that takes you to the golden staircase. As you gently float up the stairs, you vow to hear and listen to the soundtrack of your life with an open heart. Thank your shadow for communicating in this way. At the top of the stairs, take two deep breaths and open your eyes to new ways of interacting with music.
Inspired Insights, Reflections and Actions
When a song moves you to tears, your shadow may be helping you find balance.
Try this: Put on a song you listen to when you are sad. Really listen to the words, then ask yourself, “What is this helping me to understand and heal?”
Listen to recorded music or meditations that contain binaural beats, solfeggio frequencies or brainwave entrainment. Record how you feel.
Journal Work
Write down three movies or songs that bring you to tears and connect with your heart. Then write down or draw sensations, emotions and messages you take from them. You are sensing and being alerted to the shadow song that will lead you to your soul song.
