Iolite

Chakras: Root, Sacral, Third Eye

Zodiac: Libra, Sagittarius, Taurus

Planets: Sun

The original stone for navigation, Iolite is a light polarizing stone, meaning it can be used like a compass. Vikings used this violet-blue stone when the sun was hidden or set by allowing them to determine its position. Her colors may help the wearer with your own self-expression by freeing you of the expectations of others.

A symbol of hope, the “water sapphire” (not a true sapphire) boosts intuition by triggering curiosity and providing the willpower to follow where it leads. It may help ease the path of spiritual growth by defining the hunger we have to feel the power of our whole self, despite a seeming lack. It enables one to overcome a codependent need for others as forms of regulation and allows the self-confidence to pursue one’s path. The stone may be helpful in facilitating communication with the dead.

Iolite clears thoughts and allows space for friendless and helps us to accept ourselves and others. When we feel full, we come to a deeper understanding of the self-acceptance, or lack thereof, that is reflected in our relationships with others.

Throughout the 1700’s, Iolite was a staple for jewelry in Europe, but over time seemed to have lost its appeal to the masses. It received its official name hundreds of years later in 1912 and has since been designated the stone for the twenty-first wedding anniversary. The largest Iolite stone weighs more than twenty-four thousand carats.

Though a relatively “hard” stone, Iolite may be damaged when exposed to significant temperature changes. The best method for physically cleaning Iolite is to rinse it with a mild dish soap and lukewarm water.
