Raspberry Leaf
“Raspberry leaves, that’s the thing. Steep a handful wi’ rosehips and drink it when the moon’s waxing, from the quarter to the full. Then when it wanes from the full to the half, take a bit o’ barberry to purge your womb.”-Author, Diana Gabaldon, Outlander
Raspberry leaf has been used since ancient times as a general supportive tonic and healer of many common ailments. Within her, you will find vitamins C and E, Zinc, Calcium and Magnesium. Many plants, including red raspberry, hold a compound, Tannins, which help protect from unstable molecules in the body that may cause severe cell damage or growth. She may help protect the liver by containing ellagic acid, which may provide antioxidant and anticancer support.
She has shown to help reduce nausea, mouth and throat inflammation, mild diarrhea and ease minor menstrual cramps. She may help ease the labor process when utilized as a tonic (over time) and may increase milk production post-birth. There is some discrepancy between utilizing Red Raspberry in the early stages of pregnancy, as its uterus-toning properties may cause miscarriage in early pregnancies.
Native to parts of Asia and Europe, Raspberry grows best below forested trees. A cultural staple for protection, she helps one to call in one’s imagination and brings humor and grace. Use Raspberry Leaf in a tea, tea bath, face steam, and capsule form. She teaches us patience in the birthing of any being or circumstance. Her association with Venus shows us the value of ourselves and the standard which we hold others around us, encouraging us to surround ourselves with that which bears fruit. Raspberry’s association with water, in conjunction with Venus, reminds us to sit back and be formless as we await our desire to reach us.
