Peridot

The gem of the Sun, Peridot, creates light upon the shadows, believed to protect one from the terror that resides in the depths of the night. Said to be meteorite remnants of the birth of our solar system, Peridot was originally found on Topazo Island within the Egyptian Red Sea, where it was used to carve talismans. The people of the island were forced to collect the gems to increase the Pharaoh’s treasury. It is believed that the ‘emeralds’ Queen Cleopatra donned were, in fact, peridot, as it had often been mistaken before regular mining of it began.

Europeans brought peridot back after the raging Crusades to decorate the robes of clergymen. Ancient Hebrews regarded the stone as the one found in the book of Revelations used by Aaron. Prior to a coup d’etat by General Ne Win, the Chief of Staff of their Defense Forces in 1962, Burma in Southeast Asia had become one of the most prominents producers of Peridot. The most ample deposit today resides in Arizona at the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. In the 1990’s new deposits were found in Pakistan, making the world’s sources of Peridot come from the United States, Pakistan, the Himalayan Mountains and Myanmar (formerly known as Burma).
