Speedwell
Native to Europe and parts of Asia, Speedwell likes a temperate climate and grows with streaks in its petals, likened to the tears shed by Veronica, the woman who is said to have wiped Jesus’ face upon crucifixion.
Historically, this bitter tasting herb has a poignant smell marking its place in Old World medicine as an easily recognized staple for medicine. Used as an alternative to green tea, Speedwell has been used to treat cancer, purify the blood, and as a sort-of “cure all” by many cultures. It was useful in treating smallpox and the measles, but has also been boiled and used to help symptoms of asthma. More recent studies have shown that brewed as a tea, it can be used to help treat stomach ulcers, but is most often used for symptoms of a common cold, like a cough. It works as a diuretic, flushing the system of that which has been filtered out. It’s best used in recommended doses over a longer period of time for most efficient filtration and liver support.
Speedwell can be used in magical and spiritual workings surrounding intentional protection and to help encourage gentle healing. It works to release negative energy and spirits from properties or the human aura and to invite joy into one’s’ life. Place Speedwell under your pillow to encourage protection in the astral realm while dreaming. Meditate while Speedwell smolders upon self-igniting charcoal to surround yourself in its protective embrace while you embark on an intentional healing journey to the root of what may be robbing you of your joy in this life.
