Plantain

Plantains (no, not the banana-like fruit!) are now considered to be an invasive weed pretty much everywhere. They originated in Europe and Asia, but can now be found as one walks down a path or into their own yard. It has long been used for many skin ailments, while also containing vital nutrients and vitamins the body needs.

The small leaves of plantain are often eaten on salad, used as a poultice, or dried and used as an herbal tea. The rich, green leaves are full of fiber, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, zinc, copper, while also boasting staggering amounts of Vitamins A, C, and K. The plant chemicals, grouped as phytochemicals, work as an antioxidant, which helps control free radical cell growth or damage. It has been noted to also work as an antiseptic (similar to a disinfectant), anti-inflammatory (eases muscle and joint inflammation), analgesic (relieves pain), antibiotic (inhibits detrimental microorganism growth), and immune-stimulant. It has also been shown to work well as a diuretic (gets rid of excess water in the system).

A staple for soothing, Plantain can help ease indigestion and heartburn, ease the lungs and promote respiratory health. Often used to treat coughs and bronchitis, Plantain can also enhance circulation, stimulate the uterus, and has shown to reduce total cholesterol levels, treat cystitis and hay fever. Southern Europeans would use Plantain poultices on scorpion stings or snake bites, but it can also be used as a poultice on the skin to remove acne, heal wounds faster, and balance the pH of the skin.

Still raised as a crop for bird feed, Plantain has seven prominent species. It can be used for spells of protection, healing, balance and strength.
