Lemon Balm
John Evelyn (1620-1706) wrote, “[Lemon] balm is sovereign for the brain, strengthening the memory and powerfully chasing away melancholy.”
An herb of the moon, Lemon Balm embodies spiritual energies surrounding healing, unconditional love, and movement. She works subtly and smoothly in association with her main element: water.
Lemon Balm is native to southern Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. It now grows throughout the world, easily propagated from cuttings and sometimes seen as a weed. Commonly known as Melissa, she has been used throughout time to lift the spirits; many accounts far before the Middle Ages. Melissa has been included in products advertised as an “elixir of life”. It is said the Prince of Glamorgan drank a tea of Lemon Balm every day (and he lived to be 108!).
When taken as a tonic over time, it has shown to help increase energy and stamina in the physical body. It soothes and relaxes cardiovascular muscles from strain or palpitations. It also works to ease symptoms of anxiety or mild depression by reducing feelings of overall nervousness and panic that often cause one’s heart to race. Generalized anxiety can also lead to digestive problems, which Lemon Balm can help ease, like nausea, bloating, indigestion, and colicky pains. Topically, Melissa is used to soothe cuts, insect stings, fevers, and cold sores (and may help prevent further outbreaks).
Use Lemon Balm in a loose incense or tea blend, extract, capsule, poultice, or ointment form. Incorporate Melissa into your magickal workings when seeking Divine love, healing, prosperity, and longevity.
