Marshmallow
Marshmallow root has been noted to help with coughs when taken with syrup by philosopher Theophrastus (c. 372-286 BCE). Native to Europe, the Marshmallow plant has been naturalized in the Americas. This staple herb for bronchial ailments.
An herb made to smooth, Marshmallow contains mucilage, which helps coat the throat to ease soreness, dryness, and harsh coughs. The dried root of the plant is what is typically used, but the roots, leaves and flowers of Marshmallow can be dried and used in tea, capsule, tincture, or extract form, as well as a poultice for external skin ailments. It soothes inflammation in the stomach lining that promotes irritable bowl syndrome, peptic ulcers, and diverticulitis, working as a mild diuretic. The peeled root may be given to a teething baby as a chewstick. An ointment can be made with Marshmallow for boils and abscesses or in a mouthwash to target inflammation.
The plant’s name echoes where it grows most successfully: in marshy fields or tidal zones, near its native element. Associated with water and its varying correspondences, Marshmallow has been associated with love and beauty magic. It can be used as an offering to benevolent spirits or in a spell jar to ward off those who are not. Use the herb in drink or ritual work to invite smooth transitions or prosperity. Use Marshmallow to enhance protection work and enhance connection to psychic abilities. It can be planted near or on graves, or placed upon an ancestral altar to honor the dead.
Should be taken with at least 250mL (8 oz) of liquid. Orally administered drugs should be taken 1 hour before use or several hours after, as marshmallow may slow the absorption.
