Schisandra
Schisandra is a tonic herb used in Chinese culture for centuries to tone the kidneys, cleanse the blood, and increase one’s zest for life. Its restorative properties come from its balance of the five main elemental energies, shining through its warm, slightly salty, sour taste. Cultivated especially in the Chinese provinces: Jilin, Lianoning, Heilongjiang, and Hebei, Schisandra typically is propagated for its dried berries, which help the physical and etheric bodies cope with stressors.
Traditionally, Schisandra would be used as a tonic herb, meaning taken over an amount of time for maximum nutrient absorption. The fruit can be made into a tea or extract form most easily. Schisandra has shown to act as a liver, nervous system, and sexual gland tonic. It works to tone and strengthen one’s kidney and help maintain balance of fluid in the body. Though it is technically a stimulant, she has been used in Chinese medicine as an herb that calms the heart and spirit, leading it to help with insomnia and difficulties quieting the mind to fall asleep.
In many countries, Schisandra berries are highly recommended as treatment for some symptoms of mental illness due to her adaptogenic and mild anti-depressant qualities. It has been used to treat schizophrenia and chronic alcoholism.
