Chickweed
A cousin to the carnation, Chickweed grows best in shady, semi-wet locations at the edge of the woods, planted directly in gardens, and often under oak trees. A traditional Spring tonic, this self-seeding plant is named for its appeal to barnyard fowl and other birds; especially chickens.
Chickweed’s nutrients are vast and range in both medicinal and general nutritive benefits. It can be eaten fresh or steamed and is often made into an infusion or tea to cleanse the kidneys and liver, cool a hot fever and other “hot” ailments. It holds minerals, like copper, iron, and vitamins A, B, and C. An infusion of this herb can help ease inflammation of the digestive and respiratory systems; it assists with symptoms of bronchitis, pleurisy, colitis, asthma, and general allergy symptoms, like sore throat. A poultice could be formed to use externally for rheumatoid arthritis pain, dissolve warts, draw out splinters and stingers, soothe itching, and helps the body get rid of toxins as a diuretic.
Chickweed can be used in magick to promote fidelity, and invite balanced love into your relationships. Traditionally, a piece of Chickweed could be carried on your person to attract the attention of a loved one or encourage fidelity. Associated with feminine energy, she encourages the dissolution of long-held grievances and is associated with the ever-shifting tides controlled by the moon. It encourages us to balance ourselves and thrive within such balance within our own vessel and alongside others. Drink a tea with Chickweed to forgive and let go of that which holds you back from loving yourself wholly.
