Blue Vervain

A native to the Americas and Mediterranean, Blue Vervain has been noted to be the herb for ‘intense, fanatical people who have absurdly high standards for themselves or others, strain to live up to these standards, and have the emotional and mental strength, but not the physical strength (digestion, sexual centers) to live up to their own standards (Wood, 2009)’.

Far before Wood noted this, Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used Blue Vervain water for cleaning, particularly altars. Twigs would be used to make brooms for the same purposes. A staple herb for keeping the peace, myth has stated the advantages of carrying Blue Vervain on your person to help keep the peace. A tea made of Blue Vervain shared between two opposing forces is said to help ease the conflict and bring ease to negotiations. In older times, it was more commonplace to place Blue Vervain in the home to invite prosperity in life and protection against lightning. The cooling energy of this herb helps with all ailments related to heat, particularly anxiety and consistent nervousness.

One of the best non-sedative nervines, Blue Vervain is best used regularly as a tonic to help ease nervousness and feelings of anxiousness. It works as an anti-inflammatory (reducing inflammation), antibacterial (preventing growth of  bacteria), antispasmodic (easing muscle spasms), and an analgesic (relieves pain). It works as a sudorific, meaning it induces sweating to clear out the body of toxins. A tea made from Blue Vervain can be used to help with headaches, an expectorant to clean mucus from the lungs, sore throat and other cold symptoms, and ease the respiratory tract while it cleanses itself. It can be used to help with insomnia, symptoms of depression, and has shown in studies with mice to reduce the amount of and duration of Grand Mal seizures. Blue Vervain has also shown antimicrobial properties, which have helped get rid of up to 24 strains of bacteria in the human body (Myhre and Sifris, 2021).

Keep an eye out for a genus of plant that looks quite similar to Blue Vervain. Blue Vervain has spike-like heads, whereas its imposter typically exhibits flat heads.
