Astragalus Root

Astragalus Root has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for millennia as a staple adaptogen and immune supportive herb by boosting white blood cell production in the consumer’s body.

Commonly known as “Huang qi”, this “yellow leader” was introduced in North America much later, in 1925, when the USDA’s Plant Introduction Office sowed the seeds throughout the country. The plant is native to parts of Mongolia and Korea, as well as, the northern and eastern parts of China.

While working to boost white blood cell production, Astragalus has also shown to work as an antioxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory, meaning it can prevent or slow down the growth of free radical cells (potentially cancerous cells), prevent formation of disease through harmful bacteria, and soothe inflammation in muscles and joints.

Astragalus has also been used to treat some heart disease by relieving the symptoms, lowering cholesterol levels and improving overall function while also preventing colds and upper respiratory infections. It has been shown to help treat symptoms of diabetes, lower blood pressure, and overall protect the function of the liver.

This earthy, bitter root has a slightly sweet taste and may interact with prescription medications, specifically autoimmune and those who have recently had a transplant of any kind. Astragalus also works as a mild diuretic, helping the body to rid itself of extra fluid in the system.

This herb can also be used for magickal purposes when working to break a hex or boost energies of protection. Sprinkle bits of the powder or root into a smoldering incense, formal ritual, ritual bath, etc. to boost concentration and focus of intentional work. Often used in rituals of dedication, Astragalus can be used to bridge intention and manifestation.

Some species of Astragalus contain a nerve toxin that has been linked to livestock poisonings, including Astragalus lentiginosus, Astragalus mollissimus, and some others. These species are NOT (or, at least, SHOULD NOT) be sold for retail consumer purposes.
