Turmeric Root
Turmeric root has been used alongside ginger and garlic in Siddha and Ayurveda as a most cherished herb for health and culinary purposes, as well as the practical.
Since 2500 B.C., Turmeric root has been revered for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which have become increasingly popular in western culture throughout time; it’s been recorded as grown in the forests of Java, Indonesia. India maintains 50% of the global market of turmeric, while producing roughly 93-94% of the rest of the world’s supply. Reaching about a meter tall, this perennial looks a bit like ginger when it is growing.
A vibrant yellow-orange, turmeric’s signature color has been used as a natural dye for fabrics, threads, and decor. It’s beautiful glow comes from its most helpful component: cercumin, which also supplies the most health benefits from this plant, especially in conjunction with black pepper. The piperine in black pepper has shown ability to assist in cercumin absorption in the human body, improving it by up to 2000%.
Turmeric can help lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease over time, though it can ease muscle and joint aches/pains, help with indigestion or diarrhea as well. As a topical, turmeric can work as an antiseptic to help ease sprains, vertigo, stings, bites, and cuts.
Beyond its medicinal attributes, turmeric remains used in ceremonial practice in Indian culture. In the southernmost parts of India, its rhizome is worn on your person as a protection against evil spirits. Its gold hue brings in the energy of the Sun, which illuminates the dark. In the Hindu tradition, the sacred herb is used to dye a string that is tied around the bride’s neck by her groom. It indicates that the ceremony is complete, the woman is married and capable of running a household.
