The painting depicts St. Mary Magdalene and St. Sarah, who have journeyed from Egypt, arriving by boat at the marshland of the Camargue in southern France. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is a wild exotic place full of flamingos and white horses. Because of their party’s safe arrival, Mary Magdalene has become the patron saint of sailors. her daughter, Sarah, is the patron saint of the Gypsies. Each year at the end of may, the Gypsies come from all over Europe to honor St. Sarah with ceremony and celebration. They re-enact the safe landing of the boat with statues aboard, then carry them lovingly back to the church. This beautiful tradition inspired this artwork. Sarah is wearing her special symbol of an anchor and heart commemorating the event.
