Sophia is often referred to as the goddess of wisdom or the world soul. In Central and Eastern Europe, she is still revered today as the bride of god and the primal force and vehicle of creation. In the Grail Castle of Karlstein, a distinction is made between Sophia and Mary. Sophia is the woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and twelve stars above her head. Mary is being carried to her by angels. In this painting, Sophia is unveiling herself as creatrix. her hair turns into DNA from which lightning strikes the sea, as scientists suggest may have been the catalyst beginning life on Earth.
