Water was venerated because it bubbled up from the body of the goddess and was believed to contain her wisdom and healing powers. The guardians of the holy well would perform the ritual dressing of the well with flowers as a sign of devotion and appreciation of the sacred fluid. This was usually performed by three maidens. In the painting, the Druid priestess holds the green grail of regeneration in front of one of these old Cornish shrines. The ancient alchemists considered green to be the color of divinity, while in ecclesiastic symbolism, the benedicta viriditas is the color of the Holy Spirit.
