From the earliest times, the Cailleach has been venerated as the mother goddess of Ireland. In her triple goddess aspect, she is the mother, maiden, and crone. In the painting, the goddess appears in the highest cairn in Ireland, called Slieve Gullion, located in County Armagh. On the horizon can be seen the cairn-topped hills of Slieve na Cailleach, in County Meath, which are also named in her honor. Sharing the top of the mountain is the magical Lake of All Healing. Around her cairn walls are glyphs, ancient and modern, depicting both the glory and destruction of nature. Aroused from her wintery sleep, she is transforming from the crone into the maiden of spring and is ready to fly into a new cycle of life.
